Derby County 1 – 0 Watford
Phew!
At last. PJ breaths a sigh of relief and so do we.
Was the performance anything to shout about? I don’t think so. Watford are just a touch worse than we are.
Injuries ruin a team when you only have a handful of half decent players. Unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of buying a huge squad of talented players so it’s going to be like this for quite a while.
Stability and cohesion are always going to be hard to come by when players are always getting injured. Why do players get injured so frequently and quite often require weeks and weeks to recover?
Hard tackling is very admirable if you just think about passion and the will to win but, at what price? Knee injuries, groin injuries, broken bones, concussion, the list goes on. Players are getting too violent or are they just too clumsy?
Don’t you find it amazing how the good (the top 50 players) seem to generally play week in and week out. They manage to avoid getting injured in the main. Why is this? I think skill mixed with being able to sense bad situations is the key. More often than not players pile into tackles out of frustration and pressure to win. Players need educating by sports coaches in how to get the result they’re after without always getting injured.
Watch top players and see how they deal with tough defenses. It’s something that needs addressing by all clubs. Raw skill is great but it needs honing to make it a long term benefit to the club and not a millstone – injured players bringing nothing to the team.
